Different Kinds Of Thermostats

Thanks to thermostats, controlling the cooling and heating system at home and in offices is easy these days. Nowadays, electronic devices use microprocessors that allow you to program the thermostat according to what feels comfortable. Aside from comfort, thermostats allow you to save on energy and in turn, electric bills as well. In short, thermostats allow people some convenience and savings. There are several types of thermostats to choose from though.

Line Voltage Thermostats

A line voltage thermostat is basically used in a single heating system, radiant system and baseboard. To start, the line voltage thermostat is installed in series with the heater usually at 240V. And so, the current first goes through the thermostat before it goes through the heater. One disadvantage about using this type though is that it can shut off even before the heater actually delivers the set temperature. This happens when it reaches the set temperature even before the heater brings the room to the said temperature.

Low Voltage Thermostats

The low voltage thermostat is more efficient when it comes to the types of thermostats according to current control. In fact, this type is used in central heating systems whether electricity, oil or gas is used. Aside from that, such type is also useful in other applications like water heating systems like in electric unitary systems and in zone valves. With the use of this type, temperature control is more efficient. Thats because you can accurately set the temperature with the use of programmable controls.

Programmable Thermostats

With a programmable thermostat, you can set the desired temperature for specific times and days. Of all the types available today, this is the most convenient to use. You wont have to set the temperature again and again because you can set it to automatically adjust according to desired and appropriate temperature at different times of the day. Because of this its also easy to conserve energy too. Thats because your heater would not be producing heat when you dont need it to. You would even be more comfortable because you would also have enough heating when you need it.

Mechanical Thermostats

These are the cheapest type of thermostat. But then the drawback is it is also the least accurate. It basically uses bi-metallic strips or vapor-filled bellows that respond to the fluctuations of temperature. But what actually makes it less responsive is the slow response that bi-metallic strips have. Because of this temperature fluctuate a lot and do not deliver the desired temperature always.
